From measured space to purchasable material
Asphalt is commonly quoted by weight, while a paving project is measured by area and compacted thickness. This calculator converts the main rectangle plus an optional additional patch area into volume and then estimated tonnage. Mix density is an input because the correct value depends on the paving mixture and specification. The allowance is applied to the material order after geometric volume is calculated. This is a tonnage estimate only; pavement structure, subgrade preparation, drainage, temperature and compaction requirements must be established independently.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure the main pavement and non-overlapping patches.
- Use the compacted thickness and density from the project specification.
- Confirm supplier tonnage units, minimum loads and haulage.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 60 × 12 ft pavement at 2 in compacted thickness has 120 ft³. At 145 lb/ft³ it weighs 8.7 US short tons; 5% allowance gives 9.135 tons.
Asphalt Tonnage: what changes the result?
Keep measured geometry separate from coverage, laps and purchase units. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main paving length | 60 ft | 72 ft | Total paved area: 720 → 864 sq ft Compacted pavement volume: 120 → 144 cu ft |
| Main paving width | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Total paved area: 720 → 864 sq ft Compacted pavement volume: 120 → 144 cu ft |
| Compacted asphalt thickness | 2 in | 2.4 in | Compacted pavement volume: 120 → 144 cu ft Theoretical asphalt short tons: 8.7 → 10.44 US tons |
| Compacted mix density | 145 lb/ft3 | 174 lb/ft3 | Theoretical asphalt short tons: 8.7 → 10.44 US tons Order with allowance: 9.135 → 10.962 US tons |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- A metric tonne is not the same as a 2,000 lb US short ton.
- Variable-depth patches require separate takeoffs.
- The example density is editable and not a certification of a particular asphalt mix.
Frequently asked questions
Should I enter loose or compacted asphalt thickness?
Use finished compacted thickness because the density input describes the compacted mix.
Does this estimate paving labor?
No. It estimates mix quantity and the material cost entered per short ton.
Can I add patching areas?
Yes, if they use the same thickness and do not overlap the main rectangle.
