From measured space to purchasable material
Kitchen backsplashes often combine wall runs of different heights and use mosaic sheets rather than individual large tiles. This tool combines two rectangular runs, subtracts uncovered sections, and uses the useful coverage per sheet to estimate stock. It then adds cutting allowance and rounds to complete boxes. A sheet may interlock or have an irregular edge, so nominal bounding dimensions are not always its coverage. Measure range alcoves, tall returns, and feature panels separately when they do not fit the two rectangles. Outlet cuts and sheet alignment can consume material even where finished tile area is absent.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure each wall run and its tiled height.
- Deduct uncovered sections without double-counting inside corners.
- Use specified sheet coverage and confirm whole-box quantity.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
18 ft of combined run × 1.5 ft high = 27 sq ft. Deduct 1 sq ft and add 15% to get 29.9 sq ft: 30 one-sq-ft sheets, or three boxes of ten.
Backsplash Tile Sheet: what changes the result?
Separate installed coverage from the material you can purchase. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main wall run | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Mosaic sheet boxes: 3 → 4 Sheets including allowance: 30 → 35 |
| Main backsplash height | 18 in | 21.6 in | Mosaic sheet boxes: 3 → 4 Sheets including allowance: 30 → 35 |
| Second wall run | 6 ft | 7.2 ft | Mosaic sheet boxes: 3 → 4 Sheets including allowance: 30 → 32 |
| Second backsplash height | 18 in | 21.6 in | Mosaic sheet boxes: 3 → 4 Sheets including allowance: 30 → 32 |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Small outlets may not save a whole sheet, so preserve a realistic cut allowance.
- The estimate does not optimize individual mosaic chips removed from sheets.
- Edge trim, adhesive, grout, and flexible joints are separate purchases.
Frequently asked questions
How many sheets for an 18 inch kitchen backsplash?
Multiply the combined run by 1.5 ft. The sample 18 ft run gives 27 sq ft before deductions.
Are all mosaic sheets one square foot?
No. Read usable coverage from the product because interlocking shapes can cover less than their bounding rectangle.
Should I deduct outlets?
Only actual uncovered area; allow for cutting losses because a small cutout may not reduce source sheet count.
