Layout model and usable dimensions
Cabinet door dimensions depend on the opening style and on the hinge system you intend to use. This calculator handles a single door or a pair of equal doors, in either overlay or inset form. It applies the selected perimeter overlay or inset clearance, then splits paired doors around a center gap. The result is the finished outside door size, not a rail-and-stile cut list. Measure each cabinet opening independently and verify hinge and slide clearances. Face frames that are out of square can require adjustments that a rectangular opening measurement does not capture.
Fit, direction and offcut constraints
- A hinge’s stated overlay and the face-frame construction determine whether the chosen overlay is practical.
- Rail, stile, panel, and joinery dimensions require a separate construction drawing after the finished door size is set.
- Allow for finish buildup, wood movement, and out-of-square openings where relevant to your construction method.
Layout arithmetic and example
A worked example
A 30 × 24 in opening with 1/2 in overlay and paired doors separated by 1/8 in gives two doors 15.4375 in wide and 25 in high.
Measure and compare a layout
- Measure the opening width and height at several locations.
- Choose overlay or inset and verify the hinge geometry.
- Select one door or a matched pair, then enter the required center gap.
Frequently asked questions
How do I size two overlay cabinet doors?
Add the left and right outer overlays to the opening width, subtract the center gap, and divide by two.
Does inset clearance apply at the center gap?
The center gap is entered separately. Inset clearance here applies to the outside edges of the combined door opening.
Are these rough-cut dimensions?
No. These are finished outside dimensions. Milling and joinery allowances must be added according to your construction method.
