Calculation breakdown

  • Lengthwise option: 1 runs, 15.50 linear ft of roll.
  • Crosswise option: 2 runs, 21.00 linear ft of roll.
  • Padding is estimated on the 150.00 sq ft room footprint.

Layout model and usable dimensions

Broadloom carpet comes in a fixed roll width, so room area alone does not tell you how much roll length to order. This calculator compares two orientations across one rectangular room. Each orientation uses full roll-width runs and adds the specified trimming length to each run. The tool recommends the orientation with the smaller purchased area and shows the other option for comparison. It does not optimize the reuse of narrow offcuts. Pattern matching, pile direction across adjoining rooms, seam position, and stair pieces can override the most area-efficient orientation.

Read the carpet roll outputs

Recommended roll length
Recommended roll length is a layout quantity in the selected orientation.
Purchased carpet area
Purchased area is roll width multiplied by required roll length.
Area above room footprint
Area beyond the room footprint can include unusable cuts, not just an optional waste allowance.
Carpet plus padding cost
Padding and carpet use their separate cost bases.

Fit, direction and offcut constraints

  • The cheaper orientation is a material comparison, not a recommendation for seam placement.
  • Offcuts are not reused between runs. A professional cutting plan may reduce the order for connected rooms.
  • Pattern repeats and additional matching length are excluded; add them to the trim or obtain a supplier cutting schedule.

Layout arithmetic and example

For each orientation, roll length = ceil(room cross-width ÷ roll width) × (room run length + trim). Select the smaller roll length; purchased area = roll length × roll width.

A worked example

A 15 × 10 ft room fits within one 12 ft roll width. Adding 0.5 ft trim gives 15.5 linear ft, or 186 sq ft of carpet; at the entered prices, carpet plus 150 sq ft of padding costs $540.

Roll orientation can outweigh an area allowance

A room’s floor area does not change when the carpet direction rotates, but the purchased roll length can. A room wider than the available roll needs a seam or a different orientation. The layout with fewer square feet of purchased material is not automatically acceptable for patterned or directional carpet, because pile direction and seam placement still matter.

Review the recommended orientation as a material layout option; confirm pile and seam requirements before buying.

Measure and compare a layout

  1. Measure the room including alcoves that fall within the rectangular footprint.
  2. Enter the actual broadloom roll width and cutting trim per run.
  3. Compare both orientations and confirm seam and pile-direction constraints before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How much 12 ft wide carpet for a 15 by 10 room?

With 0.5 ft added to each run, a single 15.5 ft length covers the room, purchasing 186 sq ft of carpet.

Why is carpet area larger than room area?

You purchase the entire roll width even where part of that width becomes a cut-off.

Does the calculator include padding waste?

Padding is priced on net floor area in this estimate. Add its separate cutting allowance when ordering a packaged padding product.

Calculation method: JICWH methodology. Examples are planning assumptions, not product recommendations.
