From measured space to purchasable material
A lawn topdressing or garden-bed compost application is often a thin layer, so a small depth entry can change the order significantly. This calculator accepts fractional inches and converts the measured area into compost volume. An optional loss allowance covers material left in handling equipment or uneven spreading. The result shows whole bags alongside bulk cubic yards and a bag-based cost. Compost quality, maturity and application depth should match the intended use; this arithmetic does not determine whether a particular compost is suitable for turf or planting.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure the actual treated area.
- Enter the intended thin-layer depth in inches.
- Confirm the product’s labeled bag volume and purchase quantity.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
At 0.25 in over 1,000 ft², compost volume is 20.83 ft³. A 5% allowance gives 21.88 ft³, rounded to 22 one-cubic-foot bags.
Compost Topdressing: what changes the result?
Compare the layer or product assumptions behind the material order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Area to topdress | 1,000 sq ft | 1,200 sq ft | Placed topdressing volume: 20.8333 → 25 cu ft Order volume with allowance: 0.8102 → 0.9722 yd³ |
| Finished compost layer | 0.25 in | 0.3 in | Placed topdressing volume: 20.8333 → 25 cu ft Order volume with allowance: 0.8102 → 0.9722 yd³ |
| Handling allowance | 5 % | 6 % | Order volume with allowance: 0.8102 → 0.8179 yd³ Whole compost bags: 22 → 23 |
| Volume per compost bag | 1 cu ft | 1.2 cu ft | Whole compost bags: 22 → 19 Bagged compost estimate: 110 → 95 USD |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Screen size and compost consistency can affect how easily a thin layer spreads.
- Do not confuse quarter-inch topdressing with a quarter-foot layer.
- Existing soil conditions can change whether compost is appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
How much compost for a quarter-inch layer over 1,000 square feet?
The exact placed volume is 20.83 ft³, or 0.77 yd³ before allowance.
Can I use a depth smaller than one inch?
Yes. Enter a decimal such as 0.25 for a quarter inch.
Is compost weight estimated?
No. Moisture makes weight uncertain; this calculator uses volume and labeled bag capacity.
