From measured space to purchasable material
Pre-cut batts fit framing cavities, and an area-only order can hide extra pieces needed where a cavity is taller than one batt. This tool compares the clear cavity width and height with the actual batt dimensions, counts source pieces in both directions, adds spares, and rounds to packages. It assumes no compression, stretching, or offcut reuse. Use actual cavity openings rather than nominal framing spacing. This is a geometric purchase estimate; thermal performance, moisture control, fire protection, fit around services, and whether the product belongs in the intended assembly require separate checks.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure actual clear cavities.
- Enter the batt dimensions and number of equal cavities.
- Review source-piece demand and estimate other cavity sizes in separate groups.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
Twenty equal cavities require one source batt each. Two spare batts bring the count to 22, rounded to three packages containing ten each.
Batt Insulation Package: what changes the result?
Check product dimensions before treating area as a shopping quantity. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identical cavities | 20 | 21 | Source batts with spares: 22 → 23 Total clear cavity area: 186.2847 → 195.599 sq ft |
| Clear cavity width | 14.5 in | 17.4 in | Insulation packages: 3 → 5 Source batts with spares: 22 → 42 |
| Clear cavity height | 92.5 in | 111 in | Insulation packages: 3 → 5 Source batts with spares: 22 → 42 |
| Additional source batts | 2 | 3 | Source batts with spares: 22 → 23 |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Width matching does not authorize compression of an unsuitable batt.
- Services and irregular framing can increase cutting demands.
- This tool does not select an R-value or establish code compliance.
Frequently asked questions
How many batts for twenty 14.5 by 92.5 inch cavities?
With 15 × 93 inch batts, twenty source pieces cover the main cavities; two spares round to three ten-batt packages.
Can I use stud spacing as cavity width?
Measure the clear opening instead; on-center spacing includes framing thickness.
Does the tool calculate compressed batt performance?
No. Follow the product installation and assembly requirements without assuming compression preserves performance.
