From measured space to purchasable material
Joint sand coverage varies sharply with paver size, joint width and joint depth. A narrow joint between large slabs can consume much less material per square foot than a small-unit pattern. This calculator therefore uses a product’s stated coverage range rather than pretending there is one universal sand rate. Enter the low and high square-foot coverage per bag for the installation that resembles yours. The output shows an optimistic and conservative order, with an added allowance for sweeping loss and unopened spare bags if desired.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Find the coverage range for your joint configuration on the product data.
- Measure the full paved area to be filled.
- Compare both bag counts and confirm the appropriate coverage with the supplier.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
For 300 ft² with 5% allowance and coverage of 40–60 ft² per bag, the range is 6–8 bags. At $28 each, that is $168–$224.
Polymeric Sand: what changes the result?
Compare dimensions and product yields without treating quantities as a design check. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paved area | 300 sq ft | 360 sq ft | Bags at higher coverage: 6 → 7 Bags at lower coverage: 8 → 10 |
| Low coverage per bag | 40 sq ft | 48 sq ft | Bags at lower coverage: 8 → 7 Conservative bag-order estimate: 224 → 196 USD |
| High coverage per bag | 60 sq ft | 72 sq ft | Bags at higher coverage: 6 → 5 Lower bag-order estimate: 168 → 140 USD |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Not every joint sand is suitable for every paver or overlay system.
- Follow manufacturer cleaning and activation instructions; this tool does not prescribe water application.
- Extra dry sand cannot correct insufficient joint depth.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator give a range?
The product’s coverage range reflects different joint geometries. Both endpoints are useful until your actual coverage is confirmed.
Can I use a fixed square-foot-per-bag rate?
Yes. Enter the same number for low and high coverage.
Does it calculate joint volume from paver dimensions?
No. It uses product coverage because bulk density and practical sweeping losses vary.
