From measured space to purchasable material
A project can contain new drywall repairs alongside already painted walls, and those surfaces may consume primer at different rates. This calculator keeps the two areas separate, lets you enter a coverage value and coat count for each, and combines the resulting liquid quantities into one purchase estimate. This is useful when the same compatible primer will be used across both surfaces but the expected yield differs. If different primer products are required, calculate them separately. Stain blocking, bare wood treatment, and adhesion preparation must follow the selected coating system rather than a general quantity calculator.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Separate the project area by surface condition.
- Use the selected primer coverage applicable to each surface and the needed number of coats.
- Combine only surfaces receiving the same product, then round to container size.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
200 ÷ 250 + 100 ÷ 400 = 1.05 gallons before extra. Adding 10% gives 1.155 gallons, rounded to two 1-gallon containers.
Primer Coverage: what changes the result?
Check how the chosen product changes the order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| New or porous surface area | 200 sq ft | 240 sq ft | Primer needed with allowance: 1.155 → 1.331 US gal Single-coat measured area: 300 → 340 sq ft |
| Previously coated surface area | 100 sq ft | 120 sq ft | Primer needed with allowance: 1.155 → 1.21 US gal Single-coat measured area: 300 → 320 sq ft |
| Coverage on porous area | 250 ft2/gal | 300 ft2/gal | Primer needed with allowance: 1.155 → 1.0083 US gal |
| Coverage on coated area | 400 ft2/gal | 480 ft2/gal | Primer needed with allowance: 1.155 → 1.1092 US gal |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- The coverage defaults illustrate separate yields and are not a claim about any named primer.
- A higher coat count does not guarantee stain blocking or adhesion; use the coating system instructions.
- Repairs that require a different primer should be estimated in a separate run.
Frequently asked questions
Why does new drywall need a different coverage input?
A porous surface may absorb more material than an already coated surface. Enter the yield appropriate to the actual primer and substrate.
How much primer for 300 square feet of mixed surfaces?
In the sample, 200 sq ft at 250 sq ft/gallon plus 100 sq ft at 400 sq ft/gallon needs 1.05 gallons before extra, or 1.155 gallons with 10% extra.
Does primer count as a finish coat?
No. Primer and finish paint are calculated and applied as separate parts of a coating system.
