From measured space to purchasable material
Decorative rock beds often surround an island, tree circle or other feature that should not be included in the fill. This calculator supports a rectangle or a circular ring so the excluded center is deducted geometrically. It converts the intended rock depth into volume and uses your supplier’s loose bulk density for a weight estimate. Bag counts use bag weight rather than assuming every rock bag has the same volume. Rock size and the desired coverage appearance influence the appropriate depth, which remains an input rather than a tool recommendation.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Choose the rock bed geometry.
- Enter layer depth and supplier bulk density.
- Compare short tons with bag counts based on labeled bag weight.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 12 ft outside and 6 ft inside ring has 84.82 ft². At 3 in depth and 95 lb/ft³, it needs about 2,014.55 lb, rounded to 51 bags of 40 lb.
River Rock: what changes the result?
Compare the layer or product assumptions behind the material order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer ring diameter | 12 ft | 14.4 ft | Decorative rock area: 84.823 → 134.5858 sq ft Loose rock volume: 21.2058 → 33.6465 cu ft |
| Unfilled inner diameter | 6 ft | 7.2 ft | Decorative rock area: 84.823 → 72.3823 sq ft Loose rock volume: 21.2058 → 18.0956 cu ft |
| Rock layer depth | 3 in | 3.6 in | Loose rock volume: 21.2058 → 25.4469 cu ft Estimated rock weight: 2,014.5463 → 2,417.4555 lb |
| Loose bulk density | 95 lb/ft3 | 114 lb/ft3 | Estimated rock weight: 2,014.5463 → 2,417.4555 lb Bulk short tons: 1.0073 → 1.2087 US tons |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Small rock and large cobbles can produce different coverage at the same nominal depth.
- Bulk density should describe loose rock, including voids between pieces.
- Landscape fabric and edging are separate purchases.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate rock around a circular island?
Yes. Choose the ring shape and enter both outside and inside diameters.
How many bags of river rock do I need?
Bag count depends on the estimated bulk weight and the exact labeled weight per bag.
Is a solid-stone density appropriate?
No. Use loose bulk density, which includes the voids between stones.
