From measured space to purchasable material
A shingle order includes more than field bundles. Starter courses and ridge caps can be separate products with linear coverage rather than square-foot coverage. This calculator accepts a measured sloped roof area and keeps those three purchase quantities independent. Field shingles receive an area cutting allowance, while starter and cap lengths receive a separate trim allowance. Enter the coverage of the exact products in your roofing system. The tool does not assume every bundle covers one third of a square or that field shingles can always be cut into compatible caps.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Use measured sloped roof area rather than the building footprint.
- Copy coverage from all three matching roofing products.
- Check required starter runs and ridge/hip lengths from the roof layout.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
A 1,500 ft² roof plus 10% field allowance needs 50 bundles at 33.33 ft² each. A 140 ft starter run plus 5% trim needs 2 bundles at 100 ft each.
Roof Shingle: what changes the result?
Keep measured geometry separate from coverage, laps and purchase units. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Measured sloped roof area | 1,500 sq ft | 1,800 sq ft | Field shingle bundles: 50 → 60 Field-shingle material estimate: 1,750 → 2,100 USD |
| Field shingle allowance | 10 % | 12 % | Field shingle bundles: 50 → 51 Field-shingle material estimate: 1,750 → 1,785 USD |
| Field coverage per bundle | 33.33 sq ft | 39.996 sq ft | Field shingle bundles: 50 → 42 Field-shingle material estimate: 1,750 → 1,470 USD |
| Cap length per bundle | 25 ft | 30 ft | Ridge-cap bundles: 3 → 2 |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- Bundle coverage can vary with shingle product and exposure.
- System instructions determine compatible starter and cap products.
- A product allowance cannot replace a roof-plane cutting layout.
Frequently asked questions
Are all shingle bundles 33.33 square feet?
No. Enter the coverage printed for the exact shingle product.
Are ridge caps included in field bundles?
They are calculated separately here because many systems use a dedicated cap product.
Can I enter a ground footprint?
No. Enter the sloped surface area, which can be calculated with the roof area tool for a simple roof.
