Calculation breakdown

  • Pallet coverage is calculated from your entered piece size and piece count.
  • Delivery, pallet deposits and installation labor are excluded.

From measured space to purchasable material

Sod is often sold in pieces, rolls or pallets, and each supplier can package a different amount. This calculator starts with gross lawn area, removes beds and paths, and applies a cutting allowance before rounding to individual pieces and whole pallets. It reports both purchase methods so you can compare a partial-pallet order with a supplier that sells only complete pallets. The estimate is a material takeoff; turf variety, site preparation, irrigation and installation timing require their own planning before the sod is delivered.

Measure, select yield and round the order

  1. Subtract permanent non-lawn areas.
  2. Use the supplier’s actual piece coverage and pallet count.
  3. Review spare coverage created by full-pallet rounding.

Net requirement and purchase calculation

Net lawn = gross area − exclusions. Order area = net × allowance factor. Pieces and then pallets are rounded up separately.

A worked example

A 1,200 ft² lawn minus 200 ft² exclusions needs 1,050 ft² with 5% cuts. At 10 ft² per piece and 50 pieces per pallet, this is 105 pieces or 3 full pallets.

Depth and delivery comparison

Sod: what changes the result?

Compare the layer or product assumptions behind the material order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.

Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.

Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits

  • Irregular curves and many small islands can require a different cutting allowance.
  • Pallet quantities and roll dimensions vary by supplier.
  • Arrange delivery and installation timing to suit the live turf product.

Frequently asked questions

How many pallets of sod cover 1,000 square feet?

At 500 ft² per pallet and 5% cutting allowance, the order rounds to 3 full pallets. Partial-pallet sales can reduce spare material.

Are sod rolls all the same size?

No. Enter the exact coverage from your supplier.

Does this include turf installation?

No. The price shown is for complete material pallets only.
