From measured space to purchasable material
A floor coating system can include a primer and several finish coats, each sold in a different kit size with its own spread rate. This calculator keeps those layers separate, rounds each to whole kits, and combines their costs. Enter the floor area actually being coated, rather than a flooring purchase area with cutting waste. Coverage must come from the chosen product and required film thickness. The result is a material budget; it does not select a compatible system or evaluate concrete moisture, surface preparation, cure conditions, or slip resistance.
Measure, select yield and round the order
- Measure the actual floor coating area.
- Read coverage for each product at the required film thickness.
- Round primer and finish independently and check complete-kit mixing requirements.
Net requirement and purchase calculation
A worked example
400 × 2 × 1.10 ÷ 250 = 3.52 finish kits, rounded to four. Two primer kits plus four finish kits at the entered prices total $660.
Epoxy Floor Coating: what changes the result?
Check how the chosen product changes the order. The comparisons below are calculated from this page’s default example. Each row changes only the named input; all other inputs stay at their displayed example values. These are mathematical scenarios, not measurements from a completed project.
| Changed assumption | Default input | Comparison input | Result: default → comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coated floor area | 400 sq ft | 480 sq ft | Finish coating kits: 4 → 5 Coated floor area: 400 → 480 sq ft |
| Primer coats | 1 | 2 | Primer kits: 2 → 3 Coating kit cost: 660 → 750 USD |
| Finish coverage per kit per coat | 250 sq ft | 300 sq ft | Finish coating kits: 4 → 3 Coating kit cost: 660 → 540 USD |
| Finish coats | 2 | 3 | Finish coating kits: 4 → 6 Coating kit cost: 660 → 900 USD |
Displayed values are rounded. Whole-pack results change in steps; continuous quantities may change before a new pack is needed. To compare your actual project, enter your dimensions above, save a scenario, then change one assumption.
Coverage, allowance and purchasing limits
- A mixed kit may have a short pot life; do not assume unused mixed material can be stored.
- Stretching coverage changes film thickness and may affect performance.
- Flakes, topcoat, repairs, preparation, and moisture mitigation are excluded unless included in entered prices.
Frequently asked questions
How many epoxy kits for a 400 square foot garage?
At 250 sq ft per finish kit, two finish coats, and 10% extra, buy four finish kits. The example primer independently requires two kits.
Can I skip primer?
Enter zero primer coats only when the selected system and substrate specification permit it.
Does kit coverage include two coats?
Enter coverage for one coat and set the coat count separately. Confirm how the label defines its yield.
