Calculation breakdown

  • The first and last picket meet bay boundaries; a single picket leaves unused side space.

Layout model and usable dimensions

Picket count is most accurate when you estimate the clear infill spans rather than the entire property line. This calculator finds how many pickets fit within one repeated bay while maintaining at least the requested clear gap between boards. It reports the adjusted equal gap, multiplies by the number of matching bays and fence faces, and adds a spare allowance. Use it for a simple side-by-side arrangement. Shadowbox, overlapping, louvered, and alternating-width fences have different geometry and need a layout that matches their board positions.

Fit, direction and offcut constraints

  • This layout puts the outer pickets against the two span boundaries. Separate side clearances must be deducted first.
  • Wet pressure-treated boards can shrink as they dry. Follow the material guidance when choosing installation gaps.
  • Use separate calculations for partial bays and gate faces; matching bay counts assume identical clear spans.

Layout arithmetic and example

Pickets per bay = floor((span + minimum gap) ÷ (picket width + minimum gap)); adjusted gap = (span − picket count × width) ÷ (picket count − 1).

A worked example

A 72 in bay with 5.5 in pickets and a 0.5 in minimum gap fits 12 pickets. Ten single-sided bays need 120 installed pickets or 126 with 5% spares.

Measure and compare a layout

  1. Measure the clear span between the intended outer picket edges.
  2. Enter measured picket width and the minimum acceptable open gap.
  3. Multiply by matching bays and add boards for replacement or defects.

Frequently asked questions

How many 5.5 inch pickets fit in a 6 foot bay?

With a 1/2 inch minimum gap and no separate edge margins, 12 pickets fit. Their equal gaps are about 0.545 inches.

Does this calculate shadowbox fencing?

No. It counts independent side-by-side faces. A shadowbox pattern requires its own overlap and stagger layout.

Why is the calculated gap larger than the input?

The input is a minimum. The remaining space is shared equally after fitting a whole number of pickets.
