Layout model and usable dimensions
Self-adhesive wall coverings are often supplied as fixed-height panels instead of a long traditional roll. This calculator works with that packaging: it checks panel height against the finished wall and trimming allowance, reduces useful width by any required side overlap, and counts full-height panels along the wall. Choose zero overlap only when the product is designed for butt joints. The result includes spare panels and whole packs, helping you avoid ordering a panel count that cannot actually cover the wall after seams and trimming are allowed for.
Fit, direction and offcut constraints
- This assumes one full-height panel per vertical strip. It does not stack short panels vertically.
- Texture, fresh paint, moisture, and wall finish affect adhesion; follow the product preparation instructions.
- A mural with numbered panels is a designed set and should be ordered using its own coverage specification.
Layout arithmetic and example
A worked example
A 144-inch-wide wall needs seven panels when each is 24 inches wide with 0.5-inch overlaps. Adding one spare gives eight panels; four two-panel packs cost $160 at $40 per pack.
Measure and compare a layout
- Measure the wall at its widest and highest points.
- Check whether the manufacturer requires overlapping seams or butt joints.
- Enter the supplied panel height and make sure it includes sufficient trimming length.
Frequently asked questions
How many peel and stick panels do I need for a 12 ft wall?
For 24-inch panels with a 1/2-inch seam overlap, seven fitted panels cover the width. One spare makes eight panels, or four packs of two.
Why does the first panel cover more width?
The first panel has no previous panel to overlap; every following panel loses its seam overlap from its useful width.
Can I use a shorter panel and join two pieces?
The calculator rejects short panels because horizontal seams and pattern alignment require a separate installation plan.
