Layout model and usable dimensions
Wallpaper is purchased by the roll but installed in full-height strips. Dividing wall area by the area printed on a roll can therefore underestimate what to order. This calculator first finds how many strips cover your combined wall run, rounds each drop to the selected pattern repeat, and checks how many complete drops fit on a roll. It keeps short leftover pieces out of the full-drop estimate. Use the actual supplied roll length: a product described as a double roll may already combine two nominal rolls in one packaged item.
Read the wallpaper roll outputs
- Supplied rolls to buy
- Supplied rolls are physical packages of the length entered.
- Full-height strips
- Full-height strips are counted across the wall run, without blanket area deductions for openings.
- Cut length per strip
- Cut length includes the entered matching and trim model.
- Wallpaper cost
- Cost uses the physical roll count, not nominal single-roll advertising units.
Fit, direction and offcut constraints
- This is a straight-match, full-drop estimate. Half-drop matching can require staggered cuts and additional planning.
- Do not deduct an entire window area from a strip-based calculation unless you have planned how the strips will be cut around it.
- Different wall heights can be entered as separate calculations to avoid treating every drop as the tallest wall.
Layout arithmetic and example
A worked example
A 40 ft wall run needs 24 strips at a 20.5-inch usable width, plus one spare. Each 100-inch drop fits three times into a 396-inch roll, so 25 strips require nine supplied rolls.
When a large leftover still cannot replace a strip
A roll that is 396 inches long yields three 100-inch full-height strips and a 96-inch tail. That tail is only four inches shorter than a complete strip, yet it cannot cover another 100-inch drop. Counting its area as fully usable understates the order. It may still serve a shorter area if an explicit pattern-matched cutting plan permits that use.
Compare cut length per strip with usable roll length; do not judge the order from total square footage alone.
Measure and compare a layout
- Sum the widths of the walls to be covered at a common height.
- Read supplied roll width, length, and vertical repeat from the exact product.
- Allow for trimming and spare strips, then order whole supplied rolls from one batch when possible.
Frequently asked questions
How many wallpaper rolls do I need for a 40 ft wall run?
At 8 ft high, with 20.5-inch-wide, 33-ft-long rolls, 4 inches of trimming, no repeat, and one spare strip, this example needs nine supplied rolls.
Why does a large pattern repeat increase roll quantity?
Each drop may need to be lengthened to the next complete repeat, which reduces the number of drops available from one roll.
Should I enter single-roll or double-roll length?
Enter the actual physical length supplied in the priced package, whatever name the retailer uses.
